Iolite is a transparent blue gemstone commonly referred to as ‘water sapphire’. When turned, it shows three different colors depending on the direction of the crystal and the angel in which it’s being held. This quality, called Pleochroic, allows the stone to display the colors blue, violet, light yellow, and even colorless on each side. Historically, this stone has been called ‘the Vikings compass’ because it was used for its believed ability to steer their wooden ships during sea expeditions. Thought to be a meditation stone, Iolite is believed to calm emotions, strengthen intuition and help build self-confidence.
