Opal is generally a semitransparent gemstone with cascading displays of spectral colors including green, blue, red, pink, violet, orange, and yellow. Depending on its formation, the background color can be any color from the spectrum, white, or black. It is a form of hydrated silica, formed from a silicon dioxide and water solution. The play on color comes from light refracting off of gaps between the silica spheres causing the light to separate into the different colors of the spectrum. Believed to inspire optimism and enthusiasm, opal is said to amplify positive traits, fostering one’s full potential.
