Pearls are formed when something as little as a grain of sand finds its way into the shell of an oyster, clam, or mussel. The marine animal produces a substance called nacre that is meant to protect it from the foreign object by coating it. Many layers of nacre are formed one over another until the pearl is created. Naturally formed by mollusks, pearls represent love and beauty from within. They are thought to bring calm, enhance wisdom and aid with self-acceptance.
