Black Tourmaline is formed in pegmatites which are voids beneath the earth’s surface filled with hot, mineral rich liquid. These pegmatites can be found in granite and coarse rocks layered with different minerals named schist rocks. The tourmaline crystals form when this hot liquid cools and the minerals crystalize. Rough tourmaline is easily identified by its unique crystal habit which is usually a column made up of parallel, elongated crystals. Black Tourmaline is believed to be a purifying stone that deflects and transforms negative energy and thus is very protective. It is also believed to bring emotional stability.
